I am thankful that so many of our students live close to our care center. It makes visiting homes really easy. All you do is let a child grab your hand, you follow their footsteps, and within a few minutes you can enter their world and find out so much about their lives.
I'm also thankful that the Dominican/Haitian culture of this community is so hospitable. Most times, when you approach a home, you are instantly welcomed in to sit down, meet all the family, and just chit chat. They let you join in on whatever is happening in that moment- whether its a little one getting her hair braided, or shelling beans, or watching cartoons, or comforting a crying baby, or playing dominoes, you are just welcomed right in. I love that and it inspires me to be more that way in my own home.
Although these houses are very humble and simple, I am grateful that these kids do live with a roof over their heads. I know that there are many kids around the world and even many in the DR who don't have a place to call home. I also think of the recent typhoon in the Philippines that has left thousands without their homes. I am thankful for the houses in this village and am in prayer that the Lord will supply the needs of his children worldwide.
Here's first grade Merry in front of her house today
