getting to know you

Our most recent sponsorship project here involved an interview with each child. Read on for some of my favorite answers :)

What is something new you learned this year?

I learned about the human body. Our lungs help us breathe. I also got to hear my heart beating when a doctor came for check ups.

I learned how to play soccer. You and all your friends need to split up into teams and then whatever you do, just try to get the ball! I’m really good at soccer.

In social studies, I learned about Christopher Columbus. Did you know he landed in the Dominican Republic? Later, he went to Spain to talk to the king and queen.

I learned how to draw really well this year. I like to draw houses and trees. No one really taught me, I just practice a lot and I’m getting really good!

I learned a little bit of English. Like...“What is your name?” “My name is Natalia”

I learned about penguins. They look for food in the ocean, they can slide across the ice, and they like to walk side by side.

In Bible class, I learned more about the  fruit of the Spirit like love, peace, patience and kindness. I want to produce good fruit in my life.

I learned more about how good, strong, and big God is. He is so loving that He sent His son to die for us on the cross.

I learned that each day we need to seek the Lord more and more. We never know when Christ will return.

In math, I’ve been learning how to do statistics. You can take surveys on what kind of music people like and then analyze the data. It’s a little hard but I like math!

In Bible class, I learned about why we celebrate Easter. Jesus died for our sins on the cross and rose again!

In Bible class, I learned more about loving God. One way you show God you love Him is by praying from your heart.

In social studies, I learned about traffic signals and also about what hand signals you can use when you are walking or are on a bike.

I improved my basic math skills like subtraction, addition, and multiplication. I’m working on learning division now.

I love Bible class. I’ve been learning about how God works all things for good.

In Bible class, I learned more about how important it is to respect other people and take care of them. It’s important to think of other’s needs and how you can help.

I am learning how to read. My teacher is helping me a lot. First I need to keep learning all the letter sounds.

In math class, I learned how to multiply. It was pretty hard but I just did it with my brain!

In social studies, I learned about the Industrial Revolution when machines started replacing manual labor.

Explain how you cook your favorite food.

To cook fish, you first need to take the scales off and cut it open. Take out the guts and clean it out well. Then add garlic and seasonings right before you fry it in oil.  I like to go fishing at the river and then bring the fish home to eat!

To make potato salad, you boil eggs, potatoes, and carrots. Cut everything up and mix it all with some mayonnaise. You can also make about a pound of rice and let it cook a really long time but don’t let it burn! Also, you can fry fish to complete the meal.

To make juice, you first fill a pitcher with purified water. Then add a juice powder that is pear flavored. Stir it and then add ice. I always drink pear juice after I play soccer.

For breakfast, I like to make a dish called “mangu”. First you boil potatoes and then mash them and add butter. Then, you fry an egg and put it on top of the mashed potatoes.

To make fried plantains, first you need to look for the biggest, fattest plantains you can find. Peel and cut them and then fry them in oil. Then take them out and mash them a little. You can eat them with ketchup.

To make roasted pig, the first thing you do is find a pig and kill it. You need to clean it and then roast it. Once it’s done, pass it out to your family and friends. You can eat rice with it of course.

When my mom makes rice, she uses seasonings and some oil. Sometimes she even adds salami or carrots or beans. I think it cooks for 2 hours.

Well, I don’t ever have time to watch my mom cook so I don’t really know how, but she is a great cook! She makes a dish where she mixes rice, beans, and meat all together.

First, peel and cut up plantains and then fry them in oil. Take them out and mash them just a little bit. Then put them back in to fry some more. Then they are done! You can fry eggs to go with the plantains. Frying eggs just takes about 2 seconds.

To fry plantains, you peel and cut them and then fry them in oil. Then fry some salami and mix it with the plantains. I’m always right by my mom’s side when she’s cooking.

Who is your best friend? Why is that person your best friend? How long have you known him/her?

Roberto. We study the Bible together and hang out together. We’ve been friends for three years.

God. He sent his son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. He made me. I’ve known him since I was little.

Alberto. We get along really well and sometimes we act silly like clowns. We’ve been friends since we were really little because we are cousins.

Veronica. She always tells me the truth and she helps me with my homework. We’ve been friends for 1,000 years :)

Manusca. She is really kind and always helps me. She knows all my secrets and is very trustworthy. We’ve been friends since we were really little.

Jesus is my best friend. He helps me with everything. I’ve known him ever since I first heard that he was the Savior of the world.

Well, I can’t just choose one. Let me tell you all of them: Rosmina, Yenica, Yessica, Daniela, Annie, Alicia, Emy, and Mariel.  We’ve all been friends since first grade and love to be together.

Jesus! He created me and he always keeps his promises. I’ve known him since I was a little girl.
